  • Ongoing Education: Nurses stay updated through continuing education on the latest Virginia Department of Health rules and regulations, infection control measures, and best practices in home IV therapy.
  • Practical Experience: Our team has a wealth of clinical experience, which includes administering antibiotics, vitamins, fluids, and various IV therapies.

  1. IV Hydration: Usually includes normal saline or lactated Ringer’s solutions to address dehydration or restore electrolytes.
  2. IV Antibiotics: Administered through peripheral or central IV lines to treat a range of infections.
  3. Vitamin & Nutrient Infusions: Contains a combination of vitamins (like B-Complex and Vitamin C) and minerals to enhance overall well-being.

Yes. Nurse Next Door recommends that clients have an IV line set up by their primary physician or a licensed infusion center before they schedule home infusions. An established line helps decrease the number of venipunctures needed, reduces discomfort, and upholds higher infection control standards.

With your IV line in place, our experienced Registered Nurses will thoroughly verify all orders, prepare and deliver the necessary medications or fluids, and attentively monitor the clients throughout the infusion process. We work closely with your physician or infusion center to ensure you receive safe, effective, and compassionate care right in the comfort of your home. Our team is always ready to address your questions and concerns about IV lines and help you every step of the way.

  1. Verification of Orders: Our RNs double-check the doctor’s prescription, ensuring the correct medication, dosage, and infusion rate.
  2. Medication Preparation: Medications may be supplied pre-mixed or prepared by the nurse after following specific protocols. The process involves checking expiration dates and confirming appropriate dilution.
  3. Equipment Check: Nurses thoroughly check IV bags, tubing, and infusion pumps for potential defects or contamination before usage.
  4. Rate and Monitoring: The infusion pump (or manual IV drip if prescribed) is set to deliver fluids or medications over a specified time. During the infusion, the nurse keeps track of the vital signs, examines the IV site, and assesses the client’s overall condition.
  5. Documentation: All specific details, including medication name, lot number, dosage, rate, and timing, are updated and kept in the client’s medical record.

  1. Hand Hygiene: Nurses follow rigorous hand-washing and sanitization procedures before and after contacting patients.
  2. Use of Sterile Supplies: Needles, syringes, and catheters come pre-packaged, sterilized, and are intended for single use.
  3. Site Care: The IV insertion site is routinely monitored for any redness, swelling, or indications of infection. Dressings are changed according to protocol to maintain cleanliness.
  4. Aseptic Techniques: Nurses employ aseptic (sterile) techniques to reduce infection risks in every stage.
  5. Compliance with Regulations: All procedures comply with Virginia Department of Health and CDC guidelines for infection control.

  1. Sharps Containers: Used needles, syringes, and IV catheters are promptly disposed of in FDA-approved, puncture-resistant sharps containers.
  2. Labeling and Segregation: Containers are marked as “Biohazard” and stored separately from regular trash to prevent accidental reuse of needle sticks.
  3. Facility or Home Disposal: When administering  IV infusion at the client’s home, the nurse carries an approved sharps container and ensures proper disposal. If you are at a facility, disposal follows the facility’s established biohazard waste protocols.
  4. No Recapping Policy: Recapping of needles after use is avoided unless a safety device is present. This is done to prevent accidental reuse of the needle sticks.
  5. Adherence to Virginia Regulations: Disposal practices strictly follow all Virginia Department of Health regulations, maintaining the highest safety standards.

  • Client-Supplied Medications: Clients can bring prescribed and correctly labeled medications or infusion solutions, provided that a physician ordered them and our nursing team has verified everything. We will check the packaging and expiration dates and verify dosage before administration.
  • Verification Process:  The nurse complies with the verification procedure to guarantee safety and precision.

  1. Immediate Assessment: Your nurse is trained and experienced in monitoring signs of phlebitis (vein inflammation), infiltration (fluid leaking into surrounding tissue), or allergic reactions.
  2. Stop or Slow the Infusion: If you experience pain, burning, swelling, or unusual symptoms, the nurse may pause or slow the infusion and reevaluate your condition.
  3. Medication Administration Adjustments: Certain medications require pre-medications (e.g., antihistamines), or they should be infused at a slower rate to reduce side effects.
  4. Emergency Protocols: If a severe reaction happens, the nurses are certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and know how to follow specific emergency protocols. They will contact your physician as needed.
  5. Open Communication: Always let your nurse know if you experience unusual sensations. Timely communication prevents complications and ensures you receive the appropriate interventions.

Home-Based Infusions:

    1. Space & Environment: A clean and comfortable space with ample lighting and minimal distraction is required.
    2. Equipment Availability: An infusion pump, IV pole, and necessary supplies for dressings, gloves, disinfectants, etc., should be readily available.
    3. Nurse Visits: Our RNs visit the client’s home to set up the infusion, monitor vital signs, and ensure compliance with safety protocols in compliance with the Virginia Department of Health.

  1. Stringent Protocols & Policies: We adhere to established policies that align with Virginia Department of Health regulations, CDC guidelines, and best clinical practices for IV therapy.
  2. Continuing Education: All our employees must complete training in infection control, safe medication handling, and emergency response procedures.
  3. Client Feedback & Follow-Up: We ask our clients for feedback after every visit. We also schedule follow-up appointments and calls to evaluate and adjust care if and when needed.
  4. Accreditation & Licensing: We have all the required state licenses and certifications, and we meet or exceed standards set by professional healthcare accreditation bodies.
